BBS short films by the great filmmaker István Szabó are the stylistic precursors of his first features, the place where he found his voice, principally inspired by the Nouvelle Vague (and in particular François Truffaut). Te is a striking example: it is the double portrait of a man (the director behind the camera) and of a young woman (his model). Szabó composes a musical variation on the theme of love, with brilliant use of formal possibilities: cinéma vérité, modernist reflexivity, mini-narrative. A joyous declaration of love to a woman and to film. (F. R.)
