Les États généraux du film documentaire 2019 Sacem Day

Sacem Day

The Sacem (French Society of Music Composers and Publishers) enthusiastically participates in this thirty-first edition of the Lussas États généraux du film documentaire, an indispensable meeting point for audiovisual creation.
Whether it accompanies a scene or participates fully in the narrative, music is an indissociable element in an audiovisual work; it is the music that sets the tone, the rhythm, introduces an atmosphere, marks a style or a period, intensifies emotion…
Music and the image have a shared history since the beginnings. That is why the Sacem is committed to enriching the encounter between filmmakers and composers by aiding the creation and promotion of original music for documentaries.
As is its custom, the Sacem proposes a “carte blanche” day of screenings to spotlight the work of a composer of original music. This year, Éric Bentz is the subject of the day. He will be present to talk about his work on three films directed by Clément Cogitore: Bielutine, Braguino and The Evil Eye, for which he wrote the score, and also excerpts from the film North by Leslie Lagier, to be screened in its entirety the following afternoon within the “Brouillon d’un rêve” programme.
Listening to the musical piece created from the research carried out by Éric Bentz for the music of this film will also punctuate the sessions of this day.
Following the projection of this selection of documentaries by the Sacem, the composer Laurent Ganem will present the year’s award for Best music documentary to the directors Richard Minier and Édouard Salier for their documentary Africa Mia.
A fine occasion to celebrate the thirty years of a festival honouring documentary cinema and the musical creation dedicated to it!

A Day with Éric Bentz

At the same time as my activity in the group Electric Electric and the quadraphonic project La Colonie de Vacances, I have for years been developing a sensory sound universe which questions the idea of erasure, of spectre. In reaction to the very rhythmic projects indicated above, using twisted instruments, electronics and field recordings, I create textures full of murmurs and dust, deceptively static forms, slow structures often radiating a certain melancholy.
It was when the artist and filmmaker Clément Cogitore called on me to work on his documentary Bielutine that I made my first trials with the image. Since then, I have never stopped, being passionately caught up by the idea of “audio-vision”. I have worked on fiction films, long and short, documentaries and videos commissioned by museums.
During this day at the Lussas États généraux du film documentaire, I will speak about my work in collaboration with Clément Cogitore, which we have developed over ten years, from Bielutine to Braguino and The Evil Eye.
I will also speak about Leslie Lagier’s documentary North and will project never screened excerpts from the film. This moment will provide the occasion to listen to various sound pieces to illustrate the progress of the dialogue with the filmmaker.
Finally I will talk about Boris Lojkine’s latest feature-length film, Camille (to be released in October 2019), and about my work from the editing suite to the studio.
