Maison du doc : 2019, a chrysalis year…

Implanted for nearly twenty-five years in the heart of the village of Lussas, the Maison du doc (the resource centre of Ardèche images) has undertaken an important migration. It has spun a cocoon amid the new building, L’Imaginaire, in the heart of the Village documentaire.
New site, new spaces.
The 17,500 films collected over these last twenty-five years have been moved to new archive spaces. The database and its 43,000 references are stored and accessible in a new reception area. Like Rome, this wasn’t built in a day, but took place over several weeks.
The spirit remains: that of a collection built thanks to the support of filmmakers, producers, rights-holders. Each year, new titles are added to the catalogue.
This spirit makes the totality of these resources a unique object in Europe, and if we can be a little pretentious, in the world.
This migration and mutation announces others, even greater. For nearly four years, the Maison du doc has been a pole associated with the Bibliothèque National de France. This recognition goes together with the reflection and implementation of a plan to digitise and valorise all the resources in our possession. The result at the beginning of 2020 will be the birth of the online version of the Club du doc, a tool for all documentary professionals. But the fact that the Maison du doc is digitising its collection doesn’t mean that it is becoming dehumanised. The professionals who run it (Geneviève Rousseau and Annette Stall) will still be there to welcome users and accompany them in their research.
The Maison du doc is watching over the development of other chrysalises. Since 2017, Docfilmdepot has been launched. This platform offers festivals programming documentary the possibility to manage the whole process from registration through screening to selection. It significantly facilitates the whole procedure of registering films at festivals for filmmakers, producers, distributors and rights-holders.
Two years after its creation, Docfilmdepot federates around documentary nearly forty festivals (including festivals in the USA, Australia, Tunisia, Morocco and Romania) and around five thousand films produced in nearly a hundred countries.
The Maison du doc remains a central element within Ardèche images, but also the Village documentaire. It is an open site, concerned with sharing its resources, in phase with its time.
