Story of a production: Les Films de l’œil sauvage

Tuesday 24.08, 14:30, Salle Cinéma

At the end of 2015, after seven years with Bernard Bloch at Productions de l’œil sauvage, Frédéric Féraud and I founded Les Films de l’œil sauvage. With this name, we asserted an editorial heritage constructed around documentary creation.
Five years later, we have produced or co-produced seventeen documentaries, often their directors’ first films, some of which have had extensive international careers (Cannes, Berlin, Toronto, Venice, Locarno, IDFA, Hot Docs). Some have been produced with mainstream broadcasters, others with local channels. Some have been released in cinemas. This will be the case this autumn of The Kiosk by Alexandra Pianelli and Downstream to Kinshasa by Dieudo Hamadi, which will be the subject of discussion in this workshop. We have just begun a modest incursion into fiction film with the coproduction of Mater by Croat director Jure Pavlović, released last June.
We are established in the South of France and in Montreuil (just east of Paris), a double homebase that allows us to develop in complementary ecosystems. I am by training a geographer and my impulse to look elsewhere can be found in our production choices: international co-production is now central in our practice. Non occidental viewpoints, filmmakers who try to reveal spaces that have remained invisible or to reconsider the perception of familiar places are of special interest to me.
