As a central element in world popular culture, cinema occupies a special place in Auverge-Rhône-Alpes. The art was born in Lyon, at the heart of our region, driven by the genius of the Lumière brothers. This precious cultural heritage is a source of pride but also confers a heavy responsibility. Attached to our traditions, I have insisted that the Region maintain an ambitious policy favouring film in order to support creation, industry actors and the distribution of films in our territories.
An an integral part of this ambition, documentary counts among the five poles of excellence identified by the Region. We are lucky to be able to count on the commune of Lussas in Ardèche, this cinema-village which, with its documentary school and Maison du Doc, constitutes one of the locomotives of film creation in our region. In addition, it is the venue each year of the major rendez-vous that is the États généraux du film documentaire. It is a true source of pride for the Region to support an event of such importance which assembles the whole range of professionals from the sector and contributes to the dissemination of cinematic culture throughout our territory.
This 34th edition is taking place within a particular context marked by the return of war to Europe and exacerbated geopolitical tensions. A context that reminds us how much the documentary genre is indispensable for analysing and deciphering major events which, all around the world, structure the major strategic balances of the years to come.
