Destins d'orphelins Série-Collection : Thema : Paroles d'orphelins

Jean-Marc Serelle
1998 - 26 min - France

This documentary tells the story of three children with a bad start in life who became nevertheless extraordinary characters : Charlie Chaplin (alone in the world at the age of 10), Jean-Paul Sartre (fatherless at the age of 1) and Édith Piaf (abandoned by her mother in her first months).
Who made heroes of these three ? What do these "models", these orphans with whom, paradoxically, everyone can identify, tell us ?
Three intellectuals – the historian André Burguière, the psychoanalyst Gérard Haddad and the writer Pierre Pachet – reflect on the phenomenon of loss, loneliness and the fate of orphans in general. The confrontation of their views with the tale of the three lives gives rise to a rough explanation and, perhaps, the secret meaning of these "orphan destinies".
