On the South coast, in a region close to the Bay of Pigs, the inhabitants of Cienaga de Zapata work on the extraction of vegetable coal in harsh conditions, knee deep in the marshes. During moments of relaxation, children play and people sing while tourists hunt or hike around the area. A revolt breaks out on payday when the exhausted workers realise they are being robbed. A first attempt at neorealist cinema in Cuba, it was seized by the authorities and Julio García Espinosa arrested by the police.
