It was at the heart of the Civil War in Spain that André Malraux filmed this adaptation of his novel Man’s Hope (L'Espoir) in 1938. When London and Paris recognized General Franco’s government on February 27, Malraux was still in the editing room trying to finish the film. A first private screening took place in June 1939. The film was immediately banned by the censors. This screening introduces the programme “Doc History: Spain – The Civil War and the Transition”.
