Ray, a railway worker who has run out of money, ends up on the Bowery, the neighbourhood of tramps in New York. He hangs out in bars, offers drinks to alcoholics and makes friends for a few hours. After just one night, he collapses in the street and his suitcase is stolen by the person who happens to be with him. The next day, Ray goes looking for a job…
