Humberto Solás
1974 - Cuba - Couleur - 31'

Music, song, poetry, theatre and dance mix to recount the struggles of the Haitian people since the end of the 18th century. Solás structures the film using a didactic format but he surprisingly integrates a symphonic style of editing. The age-old struggle is here literally embodied by a swirling camera. The voice of Martha Jean-Claude, a diva of popular Haitian song, recounts the history of her country looking straight at the lens. The slave revolts and revolutions are staged and re-enacted, and become the rites of passage of a people always oppressed but never defeated.
