Miguel who grew up with eleven brothers in a poor district of Havana and who was part of a gang, was sent to the Isle of Pines to be transformed into a new man. On the “Isle of Youth”, society’s excluded (youth, blacks, poor, homosexuals, religious, hippies) were sent not only to work but also to contribute to the revolutionary project through their work and re-education. Sarita describes these “pioneers of the future” with affection and the Isle of Pines as an experiment in communist coexistence, a world directed by young people, a concentration of the numerous dreams and failures of the Revolution.
