“In 2012, a year before the 2020 Olympics were awarded to the city of Tokyo, I met a man who lived in a park in northeast Tokyo and was mobilizing people against the eviction of the group of people living there. I asked him, “Why don’t you apply for social benefits?” He explained that he collected cans for a living and said, “If you want, come and see where we live.” The next day I went there and felt I wanted to keep records of their lives.”
