La Mémoire gaie
Lucie Cariès
1998 - 52 min - Betacam SP - Couleur - France

Can homosexuality symbolise a certain refusal of normality or is it the normality itself, by rejecting homosexuals, that makes them different ? Do they then fight against the established order, pushed by a firm conviction, or is their combat simply a reaction to the rejection that they suffer ? The complex relations between homosexuals and the community have changed, just like the changes in our society.
The main steps in the status of homosexuals in France since 1945 are mentioned : the homophobic laws post-war, then the birth of homophile associations, which gave way, in the 70s, to a real militancy in favour of homosexual rights.
Contemporary history of homosexuality is evoked through the privileged witnesses of this evolution. Men and women, who today are over 65 years old and who constitute in a sense the "gay memory" of this century, have fought all their lives so that things would change in order to be able to live fully their sexual preference.
