On the morning of March 18th, 1942, after a long train journey through occupied France, the young Roland Barthes arrived at the Student Sanatorium in Saint-Hilaire, in the Alpes. He soon discovers this strange "World from above" where anguish of death and the constraints of the cure are combined with the promise of a rebirth.
To the friend who stayed far away, he tells of this experience, both social and intimate, which upsets his being and resonates singularly with our present.
