Ouvrier... c'est pas la classe !
Patrick Jan
2002 - 52 min - Betacam SP - Couleur et Noir & Blanc - France

Long dominated by "Peugeot culture", the Sochaux region today is doped by temping. How do the old and new workers feel about this mutation ? Do they still feel they belong to the "working class" ?
In 1978 Peugeot employed up to 42,000 people. Twenty-three years later, the permanent salaried workers in the factory are only 18,000. Gone are the days of life-long employment : the mass of temporary workers, with numbers constantly fluctuating, is now a structural component of the labour force.
In June 2001, the region employed over 5000 temp workers, mostly young people, who for the most part hope one day to be hired in a "fixed" post. One of these youngsters who for four years has done one temp job after another, testifies to this dog’s life and lets out, disenchanted : "Worker... that’s not in !"
