Une histoire du tennis
Louis-Gabriel Peynichou, Jean-Christophe Piffaut
1996 - 26 min - Vidéo - France

With engravings, illustrations and photographs, this document shows the evolution of tennis and its immense popularity throughout the ages. In the Middle Ages the jeu de paume was played with bare hands. Later, rackets increased the power of the strike ... and the number of accidents : a royal edict regulated the stuffing of the balls that were used in this game which was very popular among noblemen.
Five thousand people still play jeu de paume (now called "real tennis" in English) today. In England, lawn tennis allows women to play a sport and young people to meet. The rules of the game transpose those of a pacified, democratic society in which a common rule is acknowledged by all.
