Liberty of creation?
In the name of “Republican values” that are seemingly not respected, or in order not to irritate the far right, an increasing number of elected representatives give themselves the right to refuse subsidies to films that they consider politically sensitive. La Boucle documentaire and AURA-AURA (filmakers in Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes) propose a discussion to give some perspective and to question these serious attacks on the freedom of creation in documentary film. We will examine two concrete cases in Occitanie and the South region, as well as the contract of commitment to Republican values imposed by the Region Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes on production companies requesting financial aid. This will provide the opportunity to draft a charter based on wider reflection on the role of regional support to creative arts, on the means to better guarantee the independence of professional commissions and to protect the fundamental right of filmmakers’ creative freedom.
The panel discussion will be followed by a cocktail.
With the participation of philosopher and image specialist Marie José Mondzain, lawyer Jean-François Mary, both members of the Observatoire de la liberté de création, Bertrand Chanal (producer in Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes), Chantal Dubois (producer in Occitanie), Daniel Kupferstein, writer-director - Regard'Occ) and Anne Alix (writer-director in the South of France - AARSE).
The discussion will be moderated by Laure Vermeersch (ACID) and Antoine Dubos (AURA-AURA).
